The decision taken by the professional concerning the most appropriate intervention is based on all the information collected and on the person’s abilities, how much they collaborate in ensuring their safety, their environment’s capacity to protect them and the resources available in the short term.

The clinical decision may be based on the following questions:

  • Is there a danger that the person will attempt suicide if left alone?
  • Is there a danger of suicide attempt in the next few days?
  • Does the person have serious suicidal thoughts?
  • Can the situation change quickly for the person?
